Which of the Great Lakes are Most Popular for Cruises?

All of the Great Lakes have beautiful sites, museums, cultures, histories, cuisines and natural landscape to explore. When choosing a Great Lake cruise, you should look at the itineraries, destinations and the ships. This article takes a look at some of the lakes and the destinations you should visit while taking a cruise on them.

Lake Erie
Lake Erie is popularly known for its top destinations such as the Niagara Falls. It is the fourth biggest freshwater lake out of all the 5 Great Lakes. Lake Erie is home to some of the most beautiful bays like the Maumee Bay which has amazing spots for bird watchers. It also has the Sandusky Bay. The lake has a whopping 30 islands, including the Middle Bass Island and the North Bass Island. The region has interesting ports of calls such as Cleveland, Niagara Falls, Kelleys Islands and Munroe.

Lake Michigan
This is the second biggest American Great Lake. It is entirely in the US territory and is surrounded by Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin states. Lake Michigan’s ports of calls are Green Bay, Chicago, Milwaukee, Grand Haven, Muskegon, Traverse City and Mackinac Island. Top tourist attraction sites in the Lake Michigan region are spread throughout the different ports of call. They include the National Railroad Museum, Great Lakes Distillery, Millennium Park and the Lakeshore Museum Center. A favourite tourist spot is Mackinac Island which has the 1800’s appearance and is slow-paced. It has many museums and historic sites that can be explored.

Lake Ontario
Lake Ontario is popularly recognized as the thirteenth biggest lake in the world. It has many harbors, lagoons and sand bars. It has many flora and fauna species. The popular ports of call in Lake Ontario are Quebec City, Rochester, Thousand Islands, Montreal, Toronto, Prince Edward Island, Oswego, and Clayton. It has attraction sites such as Parks, Beaches and historic sites. Popular bays are Toronto Bay and Sodus Bay. Historic sites to visit include Fort Oswego and Fort Rouille. There are parks where visitors can relax and enjoy.

Lake Huron
It is the third biggest freshwater lake on earth. Another interesting fact is Lake Huron has the biggest freshwater island on earth, the Manitoulin Island. Lake Huron’s ports of call are Little Current, Parry Sound, Midland, Manitoulin Island and Mackinac Island. Attraction areas are St Ignace, Cheboygan State Park, Mackinac Island and USS Edson. There are many places to explore, and adventurous visitors will love cruising on Lake Huron.

Lake Superior
Lake Superior has beautiful, captivating and breath-taking views. The vast lake boasts of destinations such as Marquette, Sault Sainte Marie, Duluth, Houghton, and Thunder Bay among others.
