Prom is almost always about the big date. From advertisements of prom dress to articles on how to behave; almost everything is aimed at a young couple enjoying their big date together. So what do you do if you don’t have a prom date?
The idea of attending prom solo can be daunting. You may have a vision of all those happy couples swaying together while you stand off to the side by yourself. However, that’s not how it has to play out!
Going to prom solo can be a great experience; you just need to be willing to make it into one.
Get a dress anyway
Don’t feel like you shouldn’t get a dress because you don’t have a date to show it off to! When all your classmates are flipping through catalogs for prom dresses 2019, don’t shy away but dive right in! This is still your prom, and you’re allowed to wear whatever you want. Plus, you won’t have to worry about a date showing up in an ill-fitting suit, or some jokey attire that embarrasses you.
Go with your friends
Got a few other girlfriends who are hitting prom solo, or considering not going because of that fact? Go together! Pool your money and resources to rent a limo, go for a fancy dinner date together, and then have a great night without worrying about a date’s behavior or whether or not he’ll kiss you.
Dance how you want to dance
Often, going to prom with a boy can mean he’ll stand on the sidelines for everything except the slow songs, and you may feel obligated to stand with him. If you’re going solo though, you won’t have to worry about this at all! Get on the dance floor and tear it up for every song, without having to worry about leaving a date behind.
Act like you don’t care
Going to prom solo is the perfect time for the phrase: fake it ‘til you make it. If you’re uncertain about going to prom on your own, your best bet is to act like you don’t care. Hang out with couples, chat, laugh, and have a good time, and dress just as beautifully as you would have if you had a guy to impress. You’ll be amazed at how quickly that uncertain smile will turn into a real one if you focus on having fun.
Make awesome post-prom plans
Don’t feel that just because you don’t have a date, it means that you can’t join in the post-prom festivities. Make arrangements with friends to go to an after-party, get another outfit from JJ’s House to wear to some post-prom activities that are just as cute but may be shorter and lighter, and generally focus on having fun. Going to prom alone can seem initially intimidating, but we can assure you that, with a little planning and optimism, you can have just as much—if not more—fun as you would have with a date.
