How to save money to travel: 7 Handy tips and tricks!

December 7, 2017

If you’re passionate about spending more of your time traveling, simply continue reading to discover how you can save money to turn your travel dreams into a reality!

How to save money to travel: Seven handy tips and tricks

1. Open up a separate bank account

If you find it hard to save for your international adventures, you may want to consider opening up a separate bank account for your travel funds. As you may get excited every time you transfer spare money to your travel account. In time you may start to prioritize seeing your travel savings grow, instead of wasting money on trivial things. After all, in five years you’ll remember all of the countries you visited but you won’t remember all of the t-shirts or coffees which you brought!

2. Opt for filter coffee instead of more fancy varieties

If you purchase a latte, mochaccino or cappuccino on a daily basis, you can expect to pay $5 to feed your coffee addiction. If you switch your daily coffee for an inexpensive filter coffee, you can expect to save over $1,000 per year. Without having to give up your daily cup of coffee.

3. Choose to eat in more often

The average individual spends just over $3,000 a year, eating out at cafes and restaurants. An amount which would comfortably pay for 1-2 international trips. So it’s well worth opting to pre-pack your lunch in the mornings and to cook dinner at home, rather than eat out.If you’re concerned about missing out on valuable socializing time with family and friends, why not invite your social circle around for a potluck dinner or a cheap barbecue?

4. Carpool as much as you can

It’s well worth talking to your colleagues, to see if anyone is interested in carpooling to work. As you’ll be able to split gas costs. You can also ask your friends to carpool together to social events.

5. Get rid of your cable TV

If you still pay for cable TV, you’re far better off ditching it for Netflix, which will only set you back $10 a month. Just imagine, if you pay $150 a month for cable TV, you’re currently paying $1,800 a year. An amount which could pay for an exciting international trip.

6. Cancel your pricey gym membership

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars a year to work out in a gym, in order to maintain your current level of fitness. If you’re looking to fund your worldwide adventures, you may want to consider running, skipping and cycling to increase your fitness. You can even use playground equipment or a park bench to complete body resistance exercises.

7. Get rid of your home phone

There’s no point paying for a landline as well as a smartphone. By getting rid of your landline, you can expect to save several hundred dollars a year. Which is far more than you’d make if you chose to host a yard sale.

If you follow the savings tip listed above, you’ll be able to save an additional $10,000 per year, towards ticking new destinations off your bucket list!
